We are continuously recruiting students in two majors at SSE as followings:

1. Computer and Information Engineering (CIE):

[Requirements]
(a) To qualify as a Ph.D. student, you must meet the following requirements:

1. The applicant should hold, or expect to hold by the time of admission, a bachelor's or master’s degree in optoelectronics, electronic engineering, physics, optics, materials, mechanical engineering or a closely related field.

2. We only accept the applicant whose bachelor's degree is from 985 university or prestigious university overseas with a GPA higher than 80/100 or 3.2/4.0. Students from 211 university with strong ability are also considered.

3.  Applicants with cross-field academic backgrounds, programming experience (Python or MATLAB) or excellent experimental ability are strongly preferred.

4. The position requires good communication skills and a high level of written English. Applicants who do not speak English as their mother tongue need to provide documentations of good communication skills in English, typically evidenced by an English language test, for example TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 79 (internet-based)/IELTS Band 6.5. You must submit your English test scores before the time of admission.

 

(b) To qualify as a M.Phil. student, you have to meet the same requirements as those for Ph.D. applicants, while the requirements for GPA and educational backgrounds can be appropriately lowered. Please note that applicants with a master's degree cannot apply.

[Group Introduction]
Nano Optoelectronics Group (NOEL) has three main research areas involving novel monolithic semiconductor laser devices on silicon, optimization of nanophotonic structures using artificial intelligence, and organic optoelectronic devices. The lab focuses on the device fabrication based on the cutting-edge material provided by our cooperative research groups from University College London, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and etc. We have the capability of fabricating and testing  various devices, which includes core III/V fabrication tools (such as mask aligner, inductively coupled plasma etcher (ICP), oxidation furnaces), photoluminescence and electroluminescence testing system with spectral range from visible to MIR(mid-infrared spectroscopy) and with temperature range from 3K to room temperature, ultrafast optical measurement system with femtosecond laser and streak camera, organic devices fabrication and testing tools (thermal evaporation system, EQE measurement system) and solar simulator. Currently, there are 10 members in the lab (PI, 1 engineer, 2 research fellows, 4 PHD candidates and 1 research assistants). Our research results have been published on various high impact journals such as Nature Communications, Nano Lett., Appl. Phys. Lett., Appl. Phys. A, Opt. Express, AIP Adv. and RSC Adv..

1. Degree
The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
2. Ph.D. studying period:
4-5 years; 4 years for students with a master's degree of the same major; 5 years for students with a bachelor's degree; NOEL encourages outstanding Ph.D. students to graduate ahead of time; In 2020, the first Ph.D. student ZHOU Taojie (graduated from Nankai University with a bachelor's degree in physics) applied for early graduation with 7 articles (including Nat. Com.).
3. Careers of the Ph.D. graduates:
The research field of NOEL is the optical chip which is urgently needed by the country. After graduation, the employment is aimed at internationally renowned semiconductor chip companies. The outstanding ones may have a chance to get a faculty position in CUHKSZ.
4. Is a M.Phil. program able to be transformed into a Ph.D. program?
A M.Phil. student with outstanding scientific research outputs can be transformed to a Ph.D. at the end of the first or the second year.
5. How many Ph.D. and M.Phil. positions in the group are there?
The number of positions is not allocated by the Ministry of Education, so there is no limit. Currently, the group plans to recruit 3-4 Ph.D. students and several M.Phil. students every year.
6. What should I do if my English scores are not available before the deadline of application?
If you do not obtain the required English scores before the deadline of application, you may postpone the submission and submit it before admission. Students studying in English-taught countries are exempt from English scores.

【申请要求】
(a) 博士申请需要满足以下要求:

1. 申请人需是光电子、电子工程、光学、物理/应用物理、材料、机械相关专业学生。

2. 需是985高校本科生,成绩要求GPA3.2/4.0以上(或平均分80分以上);若从境外高校毕业,需是境外知名高校学生;211高校的能力较强的学生也可申请。  

3. 具有复合学术背景,编程经验(Python或MATLAB)或者实验能力强者优先。

4. 我们需要申请人具有良好的沟通能力和英语写作能力。境内学位需提供英文水平证明(托福:网考不低于79分,笔试不低于550分;雅思:平均分不低于6.5分);境外英语教学国家学位免英文成绩;申请时如未获得符合要求的英语成绩可暂缓提交,在入学前提交即可。

 

(b)硕士申请要求与博士申请相同,在GPA和毕业院校要求上可适当放宽;硕士毕业生不能申请。
